My Painting Process
The canvas is be placed horizontally, directly on the ground, absorbing the shadows and responding to the colours of the surrounding vegetation. Using handmade brushes, made with the grasses and leaves, the first dimension of the painting - the underpainting commences.
The canvas is then elevated into a vertical dimension, surrounding the trees, wrapping around and integrating with the three dimensional nature of the space.
A pause, a period of introspection, the exploration and recognition of the fourth dimension of time. The liminal zone between the integration of a canvas in an environment, and the creation of a painting.
The emerging painting: hung, strung and stretched
The final painting stage, allowed to continue until the forms, shapes and colours are distillated into a comprehensive and united whole. The shadows and changing light allowed to play within the space, whilst the assimilation of the information about the environment is permitted to concentrate and focus on the essence of the experience of place.
